The traditional caps of Gilgit, often referred to as “Pakol” or “Gilgiti cap”, are an iconic symbol of the region’s rich cultural heritage and identity. These woolen caps are typically round and flat on top, made from soft, handwoven wool, and are usually in earthy tones like brown, grey, or cream. What makes the Gilgit cap distinct is the decorative feather or plume, often from a bird called the Monal pheasant, which is tucked into the side of the cap during special occasions, adding a touch of elegance and pride.
The cap is worn by men across Gilgit-Baltistan, and it serves not just as a piece of clothing but as a symbol of honor, respect, and tradition. It’s commonly seen at weddings, festivals, and cultural events, and is often presented as a gift of hospitality or recognition. In recent years, the cap has also gained national recognition in Pakistan and is worn as a sign of solidarity with the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
